South East League 2011/12
Farnham’s local floorball hockey team, Southern Vipers, was
in action again on 27th November notching up some good results in
the South East League Division 2. The 5-5 draw against Basingstoke
did not reflect the overall tone of the match which the local team
controlled throughout. But of course floorball hockey is one of the
fastest sports in the world (with the world speed shot record currently
standing at 128mph) and so a few momentary lapses of concentration
let Basingstoke back in the match. The second match against the Hammerhead
Sharks delivered the required result and the 5-2 win over the Division
2 champions from London followed another win over them earlier in
the season.
The Vipers team, which is made up of many Farnham players including
those who used to play for the national Under-15 champions the Farnham
Fireballs, is now steadily rising up the Division 2 table.
A good win over Barracudas 6-3 and a disappointing draw against Hammerhead
Sharks. Only reason for the disappointment was that the Vipers were
winning 6-3 with 2 minutes to go and then we let our opponents score
3 times in 59 seconds! The first line up performed best, scoring most
of the goals and not letting many in, well done guys.
Southern Vipers notched up a 4-4 draw against Cambridge team made up mainly of Scandinavian and Central European players and a 7-6 win over Hastings. The Vipers' players score sheet of goals/assists/bench penalties looks like this:
1. Tomi Ristola 8 goals +8 goal assists, 2 minutes bench penalties
2. Andrew Field 7+5, 4min
3. Roope Rantala 10+0, 2min
4. Martin Zouhar 8+1, 18min
5. Jiri Horalek 7+2, 4min
6. Sami Ahto 6+2, 0min
7. Luke Webb 5+3, 2min
8. Matt Hatherley 2+3, 0min
9. Simon Lyford 3+0, 2min
10. Peter Halket 2+1, 2min
11. Jesper Lidström 2+1, 0min
12. Tomas Tichy 1+2, 2min
13. Santtu Rantala 0+2, 0min
14. Bryan Janes 1+0, 2min
15. Chris Clark 0+1, 0min (now travelling around Asia)
16. Rami Rantala 0+0, 2min
Vipers - Hammerhead Sharks 10-6
Barracudas - Vipers 3-4
Vipers had poor first period in the match against the London Sharks.
We were down 1-4 after first 20 minute. The players were not following
the coaches tactics from the pre-match briefing. However at the start
of the second 20 minute period the players were told to forget the
current scoreline and act as if the match was beginning again. We
asked the refs if we could change ends before the next period (a minor
procedure which is not normally followed) to help us to forget the
first period. And so during the 2nd period the Vipers' young line-up
(ex-Farnham Fireballs's youth team players) brought us back into the
match. We saw goals from Andrew, Roope and Matt within minutes of
each other and the scoreline was then even, at 4-4. With continued
effort and now following the coach's team tactics the Vipers finished
the match with a convincing win, 10-6.
The match against the Barracudas was tough but again the Vipers came through with another win leaving the team confirmed at 2nd place in Division 2 of the South East League. Tomi Ristola was this season's MVP:
1. Tomi Ristola 11 goals +9 assists=18 points, 2 minutes bench penalties
2. Roope Rantala 12+2=14, 2min
3. Andrew Field 9+5=14, 4min
4. Martin Zouhar 9+4=13, 45min
5. Sami Ahto 9+3=12, 0min
6. Jiri Horalek 7+2=9, 4min
7. Matt Hatherley 4+5=9, 0min
8. Luke Webb 5+3=8, 2min
9. Simon Lyford 3+0=3, 2min
10. Peter Halket 2+1=3, 2min
11. Jesper Lidström 2+1=3, 0min
12. Tomas Tichy 1+2=3, 2min
13. Santtu Rantala 0+2=2, 0min
14. Bryan Janes 1+0=1, 2min
15. Chris Clark 0+1=1, 0min (now travelling around Asia)
16. Jonathan Daines 0+1=1, 0min
17. Rami Rantala 0+0, 2min
